Title: Barnes’ Notes on the Old Testament
Edition: Second

Exodus 12:29

This plague is distinctly attributed here and in Exo. 12:23 to the personal intervention of the Lord; but it is to be observed that although the Lord Himself passed through to smite the Egyptians, He employed the agency of “the destroyer” Exo. 12:23, in whom, in accordance with Heb. 11:28, all the ancient versions, and most critics, recognize an Angel (compare 2 Kings 19:35; 2 Sam. 24:16).

The rest of this doesn't really answer your question directly, but I thought it was interesting - hope you will too.

Title: The Believer’s Study Bible
Edition: First

7:14 The first nine plagues form three groups of three plagues each : (1) blood (7:14-25), (2) frogs (8:1-15), and (3) lice (8:16-19); (4) flies, i.e., insects (8:22-32), (5) pestilence (9:1-7), and (6) boils (9:8-12); and (7) hail (9:13-35), (8) locusts (10:1-20), and (9) darkness (10:21-29). The first plague in each group was announced in the morning, the second in each group was announced in Pharaoh’s palace, and the last in each group came without warning . By the third plague the Egyptian magicians were put to shame and were forced to see that Moses was the minister of a divine power greater than the gods of Egypt. Beginning with the fourth plague, the region of Goshen was exempted from the plagues, thus identifying Moses’ power as coming from the God of Israel. By the sixth plague the magicians were themselves afflicted, and they could not stand before Moses. After the ninth plague, Pharaoh broke off all negotiations. The tenth plague, inflicted directly by God Himself, was the climax. God demonstrated His complete superiority and left Pharaoh and his people without excuse. These plagues referred to in the Law (Deut 7:18, 19), the Prophets (Jer 32:20), and the poetry of Israel (Ps 78:42-52; 105:26-36) are crucial to biblical faith. The plagues gave a public manifestation of the power of God; they illustrated the visitation of divine wrath upon Egypt for her cruel treatment of the Hebrews and for her idolatrous practices; and they demonstrated the superiority of YAHWEH above all pagan deities. They transmitted a warning to the nations that God would vindicate His people.

The Passover, the oldest feast still celebrated today, unfolds one of the most striking and glorious foreshadowings for the atonement of Christ on the cross found anywhere in the O.T. In fact, Christ fulfilled beautifully and perfectly each detail of the feast. “Passover” is from a Hebrew verb meaning “to pass over” or “to spare.” The Lord’s Passover provided the shelter and protection of the Almighty (cf. Luke 13:34). The directions for observing the newly instituted festival are given (vv. 3-13), as well as the divine admonition to continue its celebration year after year (vv. 14-20). The lamb without blemish was central to the feast; it belonged to YAHWEH and was a sign indicating divine protection and preservation from death. The “blood” of the lamb was a “sign” to God for the people, indicating that God would “pass over” the house covered by the “blood.” Christ Himself became the believer’s “Passover” when He laid down His sinless life and shed His innocent blood in order to cover and thus make atonement for man’s sins (Acts 20:28; Eph 1:7; Heb 9:22; 1 Pet 2:24; Rev 5:9, 10).

12:14 For the Christian, the memorial observance of the Lord’s Supper replaces the Passover Feast in this day of grace (Luke 22:20; 1 Cor 5:7, 8).

In Ex. 12:12b God states that, "against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord."
The plagues therefore, correspond to the different gods worshiped by the Egyptians. For example the goddess "Hekt" was the frog god. "Ra" the sun god was judged by 3 days of darkness, etc.
Traditionally, the so called "death angel" passed over and took the first born in death (last plague against all gods). However, I have never read about a death angel!
