Giving Your Heart to Jesus

To all who received him, to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12)

"I got saved when I gave my heart to Jesus." Have you ever asked someone what this means? Many people won't know for sure, because it's something they've heard often at church, and they assume the Bible says it too.

Some people think it means loving Jesus in a special way and/or living for him as best you can. While we certainly need to love Jesus and live for him, that's not what salvation entails. God accepts us only because of what Jesus has done for us, NEVER because of what our love has done for him.

Other people think it means "letting God in" - whatever that is. While Revelation 3:20 does talk about accepting God's fellowship, the main concern of salvation is not where God is but where we are. In God's sight, we are lost in sin and condemned in eternal judgment. We therefore need to be adopted by God, placed in Christ, and given eternal life. For salvation to occur, we need God to let us in. God's Spirit then indwells us (whether we "let" him or not) and we begin a lifelong process of following his lead every day.

The Gospel of John says the world made by Christ did not recognize him. Christ's own people did not receive him - they didn't believe the divine Word had become flesh. But, those who did acknowledge Christ and place their full confidence in him, they were accepted by God forever.

God does not save us when we "give our heart to Jesus." He saves us when we recognize Christ as our only salvation and trust him for it. We give our all to him because he first gave his all for us.
