Yep, just open windows and clear the air - even in the winter - just like Grandma did. We'd all be better off health-wise if we did. Mind you, I'm not advocating leaving them open all the time, but every day for awhile would be great.

Just what I need, even more things floating around on my already polluted air. How about just plain, delicious Fall air? That's what I need. [biglaugha]

Aromatherapy can rid homes of dangerous germs
By Carly Wall, ACHS Graduate

Recent studies have indicated that our homes are harbingers of the most dangerous bacteria and germs around---forget about public restrooms!

In home kitchens, we purchase food from a global market, which means ours foods may have traveled the globe to get to your kitchen and germs and bacteria; like E. coli and salmonella, can easily be picked up along the way and carried in with them. Experts say food poisoning kills 9000 Americans a year and 30 million more get sick but recover. And over 80% of food poisioning happens in the home.

Even our laundry rooms are filled with dangerous microbes. At the University of Arizona, environmental microbiologist Charles Gerba Ph.D., sampled the insides of 100 washing machines. More than 60% tested positive for coliform bacteria, which indicated fecal contamination. Staph bacteria was found in 20% of machines and E. coli in 10%.

What’s more, the stubborn germs don’t seem to be easily washed away. In other studies done, it showed that laundry washed and then dried for 43 minutes still had contamination; only the E. coli was destroyed by the heat. Today’s antibacterial disinfectants don’t seem to be winning the war either.

The answer? Aromatherapist and author Carly Wall points out that many families can avoid the dangers, which are especially worrisome with children or the elderly in the home, simply through the use of Aromatherapy.

"Most essential oils are highly antiseptic and bacteriological. It is known that Thyme essential oil destroys the anthrax bacillus, glanders bacillus, staphylococcus, the bacteria that causes diptheria, Ebeth’s bacillus (the typhoid agent) and Koch’s bacillus (responsible for tuberculous lesions). It is a very powerful weapon against bacteria."

She goes on to list several other essential oils useful in the fight against germs. "Lemon is second to none in its antiseptic and bactericidal properites. Studies have shown it to neutrilize staphyloccus in 5 minutes, diptheria bacillus in 20 minutes. Another good essential oil to have on hand is Peppermint. It can neutrilize tuberculosis bacillus at a dose of only .4%. Lavender is an old favorite in the laundry room. It is highly prized for its clean scent and anti-bactierial properties. It will kill the tuberculosis bacillus at a strength of only .2%. Tea Tree essential oil is perhaps the most powerful of all. It is antibiotic, anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic and anti-infectious."

Some of our more common chemical anti-septics present a problem. Germs become resistant to them after frequent usage. Not so with the essential oils. One reason may be that the essential oils are made up of many components which act together and make it difficult for germs to circumvent. Nature’s antibiotics fight off invaders with a vengence, and actually boost our own immune systems when we come into contact with them.

"To use the essential oils, make sure you use precautions as they are powerfully concentrated. Never allow them to come in contact with skin unless diluted and keep the essential oil bottles away from children and pets. For basic housecleaning sprays, (kitchen or bath) merely add 4 to 8 drops essential oil or oils to a quart of water to which _ cup white vinegar has been added; use this for all kitchen or bath surfaces including floors. Add _ teaspoon to the final rinse in your washing machine to disinfect your laundry. For a room disinfectant spray, purchase a plant mister (1 quart) and fill with water adding 16-20 drops of essential oil or oils. You can also make a wash for fruits and vegetables by adding essential oils (4-8 drops per quart of water) to a tub of water and gently washing. It will rid your foods of harmful germs in a matter of minutes as well as help get rid of pesticide residues. It’s that easy and economical to have a germ-free home. "
