Denmark aims for One Europe
... Denmark took over the six-month rotating EU presidency from Spain on July 1st, with one clear objective: to complete the EU's preparations for the Union's enlargement of up to ten new members in 2004...
The official title of the programme for Denmark's six-month stint at the EU's helm is "One Europe".
... Denmark's rallying cry is almost exclusively "enlargement, enlargement, enlargement"...
... The Danish presidency is aiming to reach common positions... in time for the Brussels Council in October, so that the full financial package can be offered to the candidate countries in November. This would leave a little over a month to negotiate final positions in time for the Copenhagen summit in December...
One Europe
While the title "One Europe", is perhaps appropriate, given the EU's pending enlargement, the presidency programme also outlines a number of other initiatives aimed at strengthening the Union. These are grouped under four headings: Freedom, security and justice; Sustainable development; Food safety; and Global responsibility...
