Assad says Syria will continue backing Hezbolla

Bashar Assad: Palestinian groups 'provide political representation to the 400,000 Palestinians living in Syria.'

DAMASCUS - Syrian President Bashar Assad on Monday shrugged off U.S. pressure to cut ties with Hezbollah and expel radical Palestinian groups regarded as terrorists by Washington.

"Syria supports the Lebanese national resistance, including Hezbollah... in resisting Israeli occupation and liberating land - politically and in the media - because the brothers in the Lebanese resistance do not need military support from Syria," he said in
an interview to the Lebanese al-Liwaa newspaper, which was reported by Syria's Arab News Agency (SANA).

Syria has the right to defend itself against any Israeli aggression against its lands, Assad said, adding that Israeli threats against Syria were not new.

"As for the Palestinian groups... their work is limited to political and media activities, and their offices in Damascus provide political representation to the 400,000 Palestinians living in Syria who look to attain their rights and return to their land," al-Liwa quoted Assad as saying.

It was the first time that Assad commented on the ten Palestinian factions existing in Syria after U.S. President George W. Bush demanded last week that Syria cut its support for Hezbollah and expel the militant Palestinian groups it hosts.
