4 Killed, 19 Wounded

[uhoh] [tears]

We should not overlook the importance of North and South Korea. They too, just like India and Pakistan, and China and Taiwan, are at the brink of nuclear war. North Korea is nasty and is not afraid to push the button.

They are not in prophecy, but rather represent the many countries nowadays who are at the brink of war. JUST as Jesus predicted in Matthew 24 - "wars and rumors of wars."

S. Korea Sailor Recounts Naval Clash
South Korean Navy Staff Sgt. Hwang Chan-kyu Recounts Bloody Naval Clash With North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea June 30 — Navy Staff Sgt. Hwang Chan-kyu thought a North Korean warship in South Korean waters would withdraw like other communist ships violating the poorly marked maritime border.

As his patrol boat was about to depart after issuing warning from its loudspeaker, the North Korean boat suddenly opened fire. His ship took a direct hit, killing four crewmen and wounding 19 others. One was missing.

In an interview broadcast Sunday, Hwang gave his account from a military hospital bed in Seoul of the clash on the previous day, the worst between the Koreas in three years.

"I could see the number '608' on the North Korean ship and thought the distance was pretty close," Hwang told KBS-TV, a South Korean television news station.

"All of a sudden, I saw a glint of bright light from the enemy ship and a moment later, our ship was ablaze," said Hwang, who suffered minor shrapnel wounds and had a bandage around his head.

The 21-minute confrontation in the Yellow Sea is the worst border clash in recent years on the world's last Cold War frontier and killed four sailors and wounded 19. It dealt a new blow to Korean reconciliation efforts and embarrassed the South during its moment in the sun as host to the World Cup soccer tournament.

"The military provocation of pre-emptive firing by a North Korean navy patrol ship is a clear violation of the armistice and an act that raises tension on the Korean peninsula. We cannot keep silent," said South Korean President Kim Dae-jung.

One Northern ship was seen being towed away in flames.

Ahn Gi-seok, a navy commodore at the South Korean office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Sunday that North Korea suffered about 30 casualties. He did not elaborate.

The Korean sea border is not clearly marked, prompting the two sides to lay conflicting claims to waters. But North Korean ships that violated the border usually retreated when challenged by South Korean military ships.

Responding to a request by the U.S.-led U.N. Command for a meeting, North Korea on Sunday reiterated an old demand for the renegotiation of the sea border, called the Northern Limit Line.

North Korea made the demand in a letter Sunday, said Kim Yong-kyu, a spokesman for the U.N. command.

The armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War did not demarcate a sea border between the two Koreas, raising sovereignty disputes over some waters.

Hoping to avoid possible armed conflicts, the U.N. Command imposed a sea border after the war. North Korea has never accepted the line.

The sea border was calm Sunday.

Two North Korean warships and about 30 fishing boats appeared in the area but stayed on their side of the border, South Korea said. Ferry services to the area resumed.

Also Sunday, 540 South Koreans left by ship on a sightseeing tour of scenic Diamond Mountain on North Korea's east coast. The tourist program is a major source of cash for the North.

Hwang said the first North Korean shots hit his ship's steering room, fatally wounding the commanding officer, Lt. Yoon Young-ha. Three sailors died in gunfire that followed.

"Lt. Yoon was bleeding heavily from his back but was still alive, so I tried artificial respiration on him but it wasn't helpful," Hwang said. "A few feet away, I saw another colleague dying, and I pulled the trigger on my machine gun like a madman."

Hwang said he also saw a colleague, Sgt. Kwon Ji-hyung, struggling to refill an ammunition cartridge on his automatic rifle with only one hand after losing his left hand in enemy fire.

South Korea blamed North Korea and demanded an apology. North Korea claimed South Korean ships fired first.

"The government will take necessary steps so the people can engage in their business without concerns," Kim said Sunday before leaving for Japan to watch the World Cup soccer final and hold talks with Japanese leaders. Kim has urged his military to be more vigilant.

The United States, which keeps 37,000 troops in South Korea as a deterrent against North Korea, expressed support for Seoul.

But it was unclear how the clash might affect U.S. efforts to end a prolonged suspension of security talks with North Korea. Washington has proposed a resumption in the second week of July in North Korea.

In 1999, a series of border violations by North Korean ships touched off the first naval clash between the two Koreas since the Korean War. One North Korean warship sank and about 30 North Korean sailors died, according to South Korea. Several South Korean sailors were wounded.
