Wildland Fire Update [Frown] [tears] [uhoh]

June 27, 2002

About 176 wildland fires were reported throughout the country yesterday, three of which became large fires in New Mexico, southern California and Idaho. There are currently 19 large fires burning in eight western states and Georgia and Virginia.

Fire conditions throughout the West remain extreme. Scattered dry thunderstorms are expected in eastern Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, western Colorado and Wyoming today, which could increase fire activity as hot and dry weather also persists.

Visitors to the public lands this summer are urged to pay close attention to fire conditions and restrictions. It is wise to check for restrictions and even closures before traveling to wildland areas. Fireworks are also forbidden on most public land areas.

Hello barrykind,

Sorry to hear you have family in Show Low - yes they did start a mandatory evacuation this evening. We will certainly remember them in our prayers.

This is not part of the Colorado fire. The Rodeo fire started early last week (150,000 acres). A second fire, the Chedski fire (30,000 acres), was started a couple of days ago by a woman stranded in the woods who built a fire to signal a helicopter. The fire quickly got out of hand. It now threatens to merge with the Rodeo fire.

Hello Kindgo,

Unless I misunderstood, the report said that the fire in Arizona is contained. That is not true at all - in fact there is zero containment. The Chedeski Fire and the much larger Rodeo Fire have nearly merged to form one massive fire wall around 50 miles long. It has burned over 130,000 acres and fire marshalls are expecting over 300,000 acres to be destroyed before this is over. And they just announced an evacuation order for the city of Show Low.

Not a pretty picture [Frown]

Weekend News Today
Lead: Faith
Source: National Fire News (NIFC)
web page
Sat Jun 22,2002 -- Initial attack was moderate in the Southwest and Western Great Basin areas and light elsewhere. Nationally, 204 new fires were reported, and all but 3 of those new ones – one each in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah – were contained. 4 large fires were contained yesterday - 3 in southern California and the Big Fire in Arizona. Currently, 17 large fires are now burning in 8 states. Acreage burned to date is more than double the 10-year average. The last update was 2,283,493 acres burned so far already this year. The 10-Year Average = 920,531.
Today will probably be a difficult one for the firefighters working on large fires in Colorado and Wyoming because of the high winds that are expected. Crews may be pulled off the fireline to ensure their safety. Tomorrow the winds are expected to decrease as well as humidities. But, next week is expected to be hot and dry.
