Food shortage hits African countries
(excerpt)
JOHANNESBURG - The World Food Program estimates that famine could afflict six Southern African countries in the next 10 months unless they receive 1 million tons of food aid.

The food shortage, caused in part by drought, already has claimed some lives, prompted children to leave school, forced women to prostitute themselves for handfuls of corn meal, and sparked violence.

Already people have died eating poisonous plants and animals in an effort to stem the hunger. In Malawi and Zimbabwe, vigilantes have attacked and killed neighbors accused of stealing a few ears of maize to feed their families.

Killer flu genes survived "eradication"
09:50 18 June 02
NewScientist.com news service

Genetic building-blocks of a strain of avian influenza that jumped the species to infect people in 1997 are still circulating in chickens in Hong Kong, new research shows. The discovery will boost fears of a fresh future outbreak in humans.

"There is a real threat to the future of agriculture and human health," says researcher Robert Webster at the St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.

The new work also shows that the 2001 virus is highly deadly in mice. "It replicates like crazy and goes straight to the brain," says Webster.

The research might help scientists to prevent future flu pandemics. Flu strains that arose in Asia in 1957 and 1968 killed a total of almost two million people.

Ebola is one of the most virulent diseases known to man, often causing massive haemorrhaging in which blood pours from the victim's skin like sweat.

Meningitis in Congo kills 24
Sunday, 16 June, 2002, 05:05 GMT 06:05 UK

The authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo say at least 24 people have died in an outbreak of meningitis in the northeast of the country.
The Health Minister, Mashako Mamba, said the illness had struck people living around Mai-Ndombe lake, about 450 kilometres from the capital, Kinshasa.
He said the illness was spreading quickly as people were wasting time visiting sorcerers rather than doctors. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/wo...000/2047748.stm

Slaughter of seals feared as deadly virus returns
By Ian Herbert, North of England Correspondent
12 June 2002

The deadly virus commonly known as canine distemper has not been forgotten on the north-east coast. In a single month 14 years ago it ripped through seal colonies from the Wash to the Orkneys, killing a total of 18,000 animals in European waters.
"Only about half of the population in the UK was exposed to PDV in 1988, so there is probably a large number of susceptible seals," John Harwood, of the research unit, said.

"The possibility this could result in a mass mortality on a similar scale to 1988 can't be ruled out."
Tourists were urged yesterday to report any evidence of sick seals, but not to approach them. Ms Edwards warned: "Seals tend to carry other viruses, including one which can affect the [human] heart. If you go near a seal it could breathe something potentially deadly to you."

HK preschoolers contract foot and mouth disease
(06/18/2002) (Agencies)

More than 30 children in a Hong Kong kindergarten have contracted the contagious hand, foot and mouth disease, a Health Department spokesman said on Tuesday.
The department was first told of the outbreak last Thursday and the number of infected children at the school in the New Territories has since doubled, he said.
The viral infection, which can be fatal, is spread through contact with nasal discharges, saliva, faeces and fluid from blisters, and contact with items used by an infected individual.
