NABLUS, West Bank (Reuters) - The militant Islamic Hamas group claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing on a Jerusalem bus Tuesday, the bomber's father said.

Hazaa al-Ghoul told Reuters he received a telephone call from a Hamas official to inform him that his son, Mohammed al-Ghoul, carried out the attack. The bomber killed 19 people on the bus crowded with schoolchildren and office workers.

Mohammed al-Ghoul was a student of Islamic studies at al-Najah University in the West Bank city of Nablus. He had apparently disappeared about three days ago. His father told Reuters from his home in the al-Fara refugee camp, near Nablus, that he was "very happy" to hear that his son was the bomber. [Mad]

Hamas did not issue a written claim of responsibility for the bombing, the latest in a string of suicide attacks against Israelis since a Palestinian uprising against Israel.

By DAVID BENDER

A suicide bomber blew up on a crowded bus Tuesday morning in Jerusalem, killing 19 people and wounding 52, police and media reports.

Among the dead are several youths, Jerusalem Police Commander Mickey Levy said. Many pupils were believed to have been on board the bus, witnesses said.

"It was a very bad attack, a very large bomb," Levy said. "I hope we can prevent," another one.

Five people sustained serious wounds, Israel Radio said.

The Izzadin Kassam military wing of Hamas claimed responsibility and identified the assailant as Mohammed al Ghoul, 22, from the Fara refugee camp near the West Bank city of Nablus.

Ghoul was a student at the city's A Najah University. Ghoul traveled to Bethlehem yesterday, which is only several kilometers from the scene of the attack.

According to officials, Ghoul boarded the bus on Route 32-A from Gilo, at about 8:00 a.m., at a stop near the Arab village of Beit Safafa, near the busy Patt Intersection in southern Jerusalem. He detonated a large suitcase, just after the bus pulled away from the stop.

The blast tore through the bus, peeling off its roof and sides.

Chief Palestinian Authority negotiator Saeb Erekat was quoted on CNN as condemning the attack, while also blaming Israel for a deteriorating security situation.

The road was closed in both directions for several hours as demolitions experts checked the area for unexploded bombs and investigators sifted through the blackened bus and two other damaged vehicles.

"There was a huge explosion, smoke and pieces of the bus and body parts were flying everywhere. It was horrible," a witness, who only gave his name as David, told Army Radio.

One woman was screaming at volunteers who were collecting remains at the scene, "Where is my sister? Where is my sister?"

Ruth Elmaliach, a teacher at a high school near the scene of the explosion, said she was in her car, waiting for the light to change at the junction, when the explosion went off.

"I'm sure our students were on the bus. I saw how the bus blew up. ... The bus is always packed at this hour. ... now we're checking to see if all the students have arrived but I'm afraid some of them have not," Elmaliach said.

Dan Vered, a witness interviewed while waiting at Hadassah-University Hospital, Ein Kerem said non-critical cases were being cleared out of the facilities' pediatric wing in order to receive the stream of wounded.

Many of the wounded are aged 10-to-12, Army Radio said.

He said several next-of-kin waiting outside the emergency room, torn with grief, attacked camera crews filming the area, as they were informed of the deaths.

"I've got to walk away, I can't bear to watch this," Vered said, describing the tumultous scene outside.

Police commander Levy warned that police are on the alert for other bombers believed to have infiltrated Jerusalem.

Jerusalem police have been on high alert for a bombing since Monday, amid a general alert in the country for several suicide bombers believed to have infiltrated from the West Bank since the weekend.

Police have set up checkpoints throughout the city.
