China Tackles Locust Plague

BEIJING (AP) - China is deploying a dozen crop-dusting planes to spray insecticide on locusts now laying waste to a massive swath of the country, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday
A continuing drought and a warm winter in China have provided ideal conditions for locusts to hatch in large numbers.
Infestations have spread from the eastern coastal province of Shandong to Xinjiang in the far northwest, Xinhua said. Locust populations are so dense that up to 5,000 can be found per square yard in some areas, it said.
The Chinese-made Yun-5s are to be used first over Inner Mongolia, the huge region running across the northern rim of the country where the insects have caused the most damage, Xinhua said.
The lightweight planes can clear hundreds of acres a day, and are much cheaper than spraying by helicopter or by hand, Xinhua said.
