Selfish Parents Ruin Childhood According to New Study

by Marcia Segelstein

Yet another study has come to the conclusion that selfish adults are responsible for the many of the problems children face. The ‘Good Childhood Inquiry’ was an investigation conducted over a two-year period in England, based on interviews with 35,000 children, parents and professionals. Its goal was to determine the causes of the emotional and behavioral problems British children are experiencing. One third of England’s 16-year-olds live without their fathers and the U.K. now has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in Europe.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, with whom I would disagree on many points, in this case has some intelligent things to say about it. He believes the problems stem from a culture of “excessive individualism,” and a me-first attitude that puts status and success above sacrifice.

A glaring case in point in the U.S. is the story of the unemployed, single woman who now has 14 children through in vitro fertilization. It’s all about her and her desire to have children, not about what’s actually best for them. Like a father who’s more than just a sperm donor.

So what do you think? Is the mother country following the USA or are we following the mother country?
