By all means, sign the on-line petition, but... quote:
...if you really want your voice to be heard, write a (legible) hand-written note to your Senators and Congressional Representative expressing your desires on this issue. One letter is far more powerful than ten phone calls or 50 e-mails because it means you took time to personally express yourself in a direct manner. Oh, and just because your Senator or Rep. is a Republican doesn't mean that they will automatically vote in favor (and vice versa). I've dealt with Congressional Reps and Senators (and their offices) from all over the US; they do read their mail and they do pay attention. I recommend you include a day and evening phone number as well. I got a personal call from Senator Thurmon (himself!) one time because of a letter written by another man.
Be polite, be direct, be specific.
