U.S District Judge Phyliis Hamilton, has ruled in favor of public school curriculum inclusion of a student guide: "From the beginning you and your classmates will become Muslims."
Seventh graders in a growing number of public schools in California, who are NOT permitted to wear a cross or speak the name of Jesus, will be required to attend an intensive three week course on Islam. Students will be required to choose a Muslim name, dress up as Arabs, recite lines from a Muslim prayer such as " In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful," (the court document changed "Allah" to "God" but the actual handout says "Allah") The students will also have to make group banners that state the words, "In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate,". Students must abstain from something in demonstration of fasting for Ramadan. They are also required to volunteer community service in conformance with Muslim requirements.
A handout includes "becoming Muslim" and prayer to Allah in public schools. The textbook, Across the Centuries, has been adopted by the California School System and is described as a Social Studies/History Book. It is published by Houghton-Mifflin (Boston, Ma.)

Hamilton cites a Supreme Court ruling that the Ten Commandments are unconstitutional because they endorse Christianity. Rather, Hamilton argues, "Here, in contrast, the primary purpose of the Islam module was the secular goal of educating students about Islamic culture. Thus, even the display of religious texts in a purely secular context will survive."

A federal judge (U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton in San Fransisco) approved students reciting a Muslim prayer in a school even while federal law bans all other forms of prayer.
Students were to recite in a class assignment, "In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of Creation."
To complete the Islamic studies, students were to write an essay but were told to only write positive things.
The judge threw a case out in which some parents tried to sue the school.
