take, kill, and eat. 'nuff said. if the one church member does not like it then don't attend. now he's caused all this unnecessary grief to his congregation. how biblical is that?

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Our Eschatology may vary even our Ecclesiology may be disputed among us but our Soteriology most assume a singularity and exclusivity which in biblical term is known as Quote; "The Narrow Way" and Quote!

Here's a copy of the letter

The Reverend David T. McMillan III
Hibernia United Methodist Church
220 Hibernia Rd.
Coatesville, PA 19320

2 pages via fax: 610-384-4211

Dear Rev. McMillan,

On behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) 750,000 members and supporters, I am writing to request that the Hibernia United Methodist Church cancel its Pig Roast, which is scheduled to coincide with the Country Fair, and to ask you to pledge to never again include the slaughter of animals in any event you host or sponsor. I think you will agree, upon reflection, that this odd tradition is in direct conflict with the church’s mission.

As you know, John Wesley was an ethical vegetarian. Mr. Wesley recognized that all God’s creatures should be protected from abuse and exploitation and even stated that concern for all God’s creatures is a natural extension of one’s Christian faith: “I believe in my heart that faith in Jesus Christ can and will lead us beyond an exclusive concern for the well-being of other human beings, to a broader concern for the well-being of the birds in our backyards, the fish in our rivers, and every living creature on the face of the earth.”

God’s purpose is spelled out in the Bible’s account of the Garden of Eden (Gen. 1) and in the visions of the prophets Isaiah, Amos, Micah, and others. In every instance, God’s ideal is one in which there is no animal exploitation and all animals, including people, are vegetarians. We’re not at this glorious end time now, of course, but shouldn’t we, who pray for God’s “will [to] be done, on earth as it is in heaven,” strive to live in accordance with these principles now? The hosting of a pig roast violates the very values that your church supports in other areas.

But even beyond God’s vegetarian ideal, modern agricultural systems demand Jeremiah-level condemnation. God designed pigs to play with one another, root around in the soil, forage for food, and enjoy God’s glory. These animals are even more intelligent than dogs, and, believe it or not, research studies have found that they can actually play video games more competently than some primates. Modern factory farms mutilate pigs’ genitals, teeth, and ears, all without painkillers; the pigs are confined to gestation crates so small that they cannot even turn around and go insane from the lack of stimulation, biting incessantly at the metal bars in front of them. Today’s pigs are never allowed to feel the grass beneath their feet and the sun upon their face or to experience the great outdoors at all, save that brief moment en route to the horrors of the slaughterhouse. Basically, modern animal agriculture denies animals everything that God created them to enjoy.

Clearly, Christ’s teachings of mercy and compassion and his comparison of himself to a hen, invoking the obvious love of animals for their families, are contradicted by today’s harrowing abuse of animals on factory farms, during the awful trip to slaughter, and in slaughterhouses. Please ask yourself: Would Jesus have mutilated, confined, trucked through all weather extremes, and then slaughtered a sentient being who is capable of feeling pain and suffering, joy and peace?

By hosting a pig roast, your church is lending its imprimatur to factory-farming practices that are clearly and completely at odds with Christian values. As St. Francis of Assisi said, “All creatures are created from the same paternal heartbeat of God.” The confinement and cruelty inherent in factory farming are clearly an insult to the order of the universe, which includes God’s pigs among those sharing their source in the heartbeat of God. I look forward to hearing that you have ended this practice of serving mutilated and murdered animals to your congregation. Please follow in Mr. Wesley’s footsteps and teach your congregation that compassion must extend to all of God’s creation.

I am also putting in the mail for you, today, a copy of PETA’s “Meet Your Meat” video, which shows some of the cruel practices that are in common use on modern-day farms, as well as a copy of Father John Dear’s “Christianity and Vegetarianism” booklet. I would be delighted to ship vegetarian chili and veggie dogs in time for your event, if you will agree to cancel the pig roast.

Please let me know of your decision so that I can share the information with our members. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Bruce G. Friedrich
Director of Vegan Outreach

Gee Kindgo; what has happened to plain Christian Fellowship, meal gettogethers and so forth? these small protest groups now resort to lying and deceit to get their point across.

I don't know where they get their information about roasting a pig being unbiblical [although biblically, pig was a specific no-no]

If folks want to be vegetarian, fine. If they want to get equal rights for animals, fine. But what about the rights of those who like and appreciate good meat, especially a 'pig-pickin'
ain't nothin' better here in the sunny south!

I hope this fellowship will not knuckle under.

Activists to church: Serve vegetarian menu or else
A fund-raising pig roast is branded "un-Christian."
By Sandy Bauers
Inquirer Staff Writer

In a region where pig roasts are a common way for churches of various denominations to raise money and simply have a good time, the pigs themselves, while no doubt praised highly for their succulence, have not had many vocal champions.

Now, they have one.

The folks at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have put a Chester County church on notice that its annual pig roast is unchristian and will be the subject of protest unless the church agrees to serve vegetarian food instead.

The roast is part of an annual country fair set for Saturday at Hibernia United Methodist Church in West Brandywine Township. It is an otherwise tame affair with craft tables, balloons, games for children, an antique car display... and more than one roast pig.

"The first pig will be done at about 10:30 a.m.," the church's Web site says.

To PETA members, this is no cause for salivation. Much less celebration.

"By hosting a pig roast, your church is lending its imprimatur to factory-farming practices that are clearly and completely at odds with Christian values," said PETA's Bruce Friedrich, who is coordinating the protest, in a letter to the Rev. David T. McMillan 3d, pastor of the church.

Friedrich also posted an "action alert" on PETA's Web site, www.peta.org, asking members to call Mr. McMillan to register their protests. But for at least an hour or so on Monday, the site listed the number of Mr. McMillan's home phone before it was changed to the church phone.

All afternoon, the church phone remained busy, and by Tuesday morning, calls to the McMillan home resulted in a recording saying that the number was out of service.

Mr. McMillan has not returned phone calls to either place.

Walter Werner, police chief of the small rural township, said the event is normally a quiet affair and, when told of the possibility of protesters crashing the party, he said in amazement: "What? Why here?"

PETA is not necessarily going to be showing up en masse at every church pig roast.

Friedrich said the organization became involved in this one after a receiving a complaint. "One of our members is a member of this church. He says he spoke to other people who are not going and have a problem with roasting a pig."

Friedrich said the man did not want to be identified but that the issue isn't the pig roast per se - as opposed to, say, a less vivid alternative, such as serving sliced pork instead of having an animal recognizable as a pig spitted and turned over a fire.

The issue is meat-eating itself.

"Christians, especially, who follow the prince of peace - not the bloody butcher - should be adopting a vegetarian diet," he said.

"The issue for the church members who objected is that these are God's creatures, designed by God to root in the soil looking for food, to form social relationships, to play, to breathe fresh air and so on," Friedrich said.

Pigs, he said, "are more intelligent than dogs or cats. They play video games more competently than some primates. And they form social relationships so complex that these relationships had previously been found only in primates."

Friedrich had offered to ship veggie dogs and chili, but he said later he'd be willing to deliver them personally. "We're likely to be coming along anyway" with other protesters, he noted.

If the pig roast goes on as planned, "in good Christian tradition, we will probably bear witness of some sort," he said, adding, "although I wouldn't rule out turning over tables."
