NBC NEWS AND NEWS SERVICES
PHILADELPHIA, July 23 — A 7-year-old girl was found in good condition late Tuesday after being kidnapped a day earlier from her Philadelphia neighborhood, police said.

ROBERT DAVIS, chief inspector for the Philadelphia Police Department, said late Tuesday that the girl, Erica Pratt, had been found and was in good condition. After being interviewed briefly by police, she was taken to Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania, where she was being treated for a corneal abrasion, which is believed to have been caused by duct tape around her eyes.
“She is with her grandmother now. She is tired, shook up, but she is a very strong little girl,” Davis said.
Erica was snatched from her street at 9:40 p.m. Monday by two men in a white sedan.
Davis said that the girl had been bound with duct tape in the basement of a vacant house. She somehow managed to get free and ran to the front door, which was locked. She banged on the front window and door, breaking the window and attracting the attention of three neighborhood boys, who came to help her.
One of the boys found two street officers in the neighborhood, who got her out of the house.

2 NOW CONSIDERED SUSPECTS
Davis said the two men sought for questioning were now considered suspects in the crime. The men are James Burns, 29, and Edward Johnson, 23.
Erica was found in the city’s Logan neighborhood, far from the southwest Philadelphia neighborhood of Kingsessing, where she had been abducted.
Davis said that Erica had been left alone in the house all day, with some food and possibly some water.
The child’s grandmother, Barbara Pratt, said an hour after the abduction, she received a phone call demanding $150,000 for the girl’s return, FBI spokeswoman Linda Vizi said.

7-Year-Old Girl Believed Kidnapped From Philadelphia Street Corner
The Associated Press
Published: Jul 23, 2002

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police said Tuesday they were investigating reports that a 7-year-old girl was abducted, kicking and screaming, from a street corner by two men in a white car.
Witnesses told police the girl, Erica Pratt, was grabbed from a corner in southwest Philadelphia at 9:40 p.m. Monday. A 5-year-old girl told police a man dragged Pratt kicking and screaming into a vehicle and drove away, the Philadelphia Daily News reported Tuesday.

Witnesses told police said was taken away by two heavyset men in a white car with dark windows.

The child's grandmother, Barbara Pratt, said she received a phone call demanding $150,000 for the girl's return.

"The information about the abduction came from a 5-year-old, so that 5-year-old has not been sufficiently interviewed yet," Lt. John Henfey told the newspaper.

Based on initial reports, Henfey said it appeared the girl's disappearance was not a domestic dispute.
